Synopsis

In the wake of the Grand Rite, merely the first phase of the Hive’s dark undertaking, a horrendous plague sweeps through Salem. Tensions escalate between Tituba and Mary, who tries to enjoy what limited time she is allowed to spend with her young, recently returned son. Mary confronts Mercy Lewis in a bid to strike a bargain with the upstart Witch, but Mercy already has diabolical plans of her own in play. As Anne Hale begins to comprehend the nature of her own true power, she is extended an offer that may provide her some clarity and relief. Meanwhile , as Mary attempts to exert her mortal influence over the citizenry of Salem, she makes the acquaintance of an intriguing true man of science, Dr. Samuel Wainwright, who may threaten her cause. Back in Boston, a haunted Cotton Mather must answer for his failure in Salem; and Mary learns John Alden’s fate.... or so she thinks.

Episode Overview

SPOILERS AHEAD

The episode opens at night, at the harbor, with a kid who steals a chicken and is chased by the guardian right into a sick den, where a girl had told him not to come. Here the man and the child are attacked by a woman with the body disfigured by the plague. The whole house is filled with the bodies of plague victims.

Mary Sibley sings a lullaby to her son in the House of the Seven Gables, but is interrupted by Tituba arrived to bring the kid home. The two women then had an altercation and Tituba reveals that the Elders have decreed that as long as Mary will not accomplish her mission, she cannot have an exclusive relationship with the child. Tituba reminds fact that Mary has to deal with Mercy Lewis, a threat, and Anne Hale, a cradle witch of the oldest and high lineage.

Alone, Mary visits the Seer, asking him to find John Alden. The Seer then take off his eyes and puts them in the palms of his Mistress, for Mary to see through his eyes. The witch has a vision of John Alden surrounded by Indians who are officiating his funeral. We find out later that Sooleawa, a young Indian, has created a dream catcher with rope and toads smoked with the smoke of sage, to block the powers and visions of witches. John Alden, in fact, is alive and willing to return to Salem to kill all witches. Mary is then visiting Mercy Lewis, who has since settled in the old pit where the citizens of Salem threw the corpses of the unwanted. The two discuss when Mary tries to bring back the young witch on her side, but Mercy is determined to pursue her revenge against her old mistress.
